Baalbek Roman Ruins is a top place to visit
The Bekaa Valley is a vast, flat region primarily used for agriculture. A drive to the Baalbek Roman Ruins, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back as early as 9000 BC, is a must. This temple complex was one of the most renowned sanctuaries in the Roman world. Named after the sun god Baal, Baalbek—also known as the "City of the Sun"—is home to the temples of Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, and the Odeon, a structure used for musical and poetic performances.
Finish off the day by visiting one of the renowned Baalbek wineries. We visited two of the wineries that were recommended to us; these were Cave Kouroum and Chateau Ksara. We would advise Chateau Ksara as it is on its way back to Beirut.
Getting there:
Beirut - Baalbek - 2 hours+
Baalbek - Chateau Ksara - 45 minutes
Chateau Ksara - Beirut - 1 hour 15 minute
If you have extra time, or you decided to stay in the area we suggest visiting the south of the Bekaa valley and doing the things on the map highlighted in orange
Places to stay in the Bekaa Valley:
-Palmyra Hotel Baalbek (this is a historic hotel that definitely needs updating but is quirky)
-Al Haush - this is a farm place with a pool, food growing, the opportunity to learn to make Lebanese Zaata etc... also a restaurant with great food
Restaurants & food:
-Tawlet Ammiq - you need to book it in advance. It is a buffet-style menu. the location may not work if you have a short time in the Bekaa Valley.
- Try to eat meat pies called "Sfiha Baalbekiya" whilst you are in Baalbeck as it is their speciality. A restaurant that specialises in this is called "Lakkis", it is located between Beirut and Baalbek.
